Caramel Apple Bread {recipe} #SundaySupper
I haven't been able to be a part of the #SundaySupper posts for a little while... but, I'm back this week! This week, we are all sharing some amazing apple goodness with the start of fall!
I tossed around a few different ideas on what I'd make using apples... and I couldn't get the idea of caramel apples out of my head! No, I didn't do the traditional, sticky caramel apples we all think of... instead I decided to play around with a recipe to make a quick bread with those flavors.
There is just something about the combination of caramel and apples in the fall... all we need are the leaves to change colors so that we can enjoy the brilliance of the season.
While I had a general idea of what I wanted to do, I tried adapting a recipe from a source I haven't used before... let's just say that first loaf of bread, while delicious in flavor... kind of well, fell flat. So, back to the drawing board I went.
My second attempt (just this past Friday night!), went so much better! With the adjustments I made, the bread baked up beautifully... and the caramel flavor is distributed throughout the bread. It's a nice dense, moist bread that will go nicely with a cup of hot tea or toasted with a pat of butter as a special breakfast or brunch treat.
Needless to say, there is a little less than half left as I write this post... I'll have to make more very soon! Which will be so easy since apples are at their peek right now!

Ingredients
- 1 stick of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup (approximately 1 medium) Granny Smith Apple, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup dulce de leche (or caramel)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees (adjust as needed for your individual oven as temps my vary) and spray a 9-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Then, add the eggs and vanilla and continue to beat until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg. Stir to combine.
- Add the flour and buttermilk (alteranating between the two) to the wet ingredients and use a spatula to fold in and combine just until moistened.
- Fold in the diced apple.
- Pour batter into prepared pan.
- Add dots of dulce de leche (or prepared caramel) to the top of the loaf. Using a knife, gently move it through the ducle de leche to create a swirled effect.
- Bake for approximately 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
