Product Review: Eggies
Have you ever been in your local Target or Wal-Mart or some other discount store and stumbled across one of those "As Seen on TV" products? I've seen them tons of times, and on occasion I give in to the urge and buy the product... sometimes with great results... and others, well... they get packaged back up and returned.
Last weekend, we were at Target doing a bit of kid-free shopping and as we meandered through the kitchen goodies area I saw a product I had heard about - Eggies.
I really can't tell you what possessed us to pick this product up other than curiousity. I thought that it would be cool to have some hard-boiled eggs on hand without shells so that My Boys could just grab one from the fridge and get a quick protein fix in the morning. Not like it's hard to peel eggs or anything, but it could save a few moments... right?
I got the little box home and opened it up and read the directions. After washing the pieces - and there are 4 little plastic pieces to each and every Eggie - I then assembled, cracked an egg into each one and got them going in a pot of water.
I noticed fairly quickly that one of the Eggies was not tightened enough... which meant bits of egg in the water... 1st one to get pulled out and tossed. Thinking back, maybe I should have attempted to poach that egg since it was just hanging out in there anyway.
Then, as I was just checking the Eggies to see how they were coming along - another one opened up on me! This one was nearly cooked, so it didn't really cause a problem.
Following the directions that came with them, I cooked them for about 17 minutes. They did come out perfectly cooked... but, each one had one flat side.
Based on the photos on the box, we had figured that somehow while they cooked they would end up "egg shaped". Little did we know that the photos on the box were showing only the top half of the egg!
Pros:
I don't see the need for another one use item in my kitchen. It's just as easy to prepare traditional hard boiled eggs without all the pieces to keep track of and assemble. The fact that they are dishwasher safe is great - but they are small, so you would need to put them in one of those dishwasher baskets people use for baby bottle parts. I'll be packaging these up and returning them to Target this weekend.
If you really can't stand peeling eggs, then I'd say go ahead and purchase these little Eggies for $9.99 and enjoy. Otherwise, skip them.

Pros:
- No egg shells to peel
- Perfectly cooked
- Dishwasher safe
- The flat side of the egg would lend itself well to certain types of food presentations... perhaps your deviled eggs would sit nicely without needing a special dish
- Too many pieces - 4 pieces for each Eggie to wash, assemble and store
- Hard to be certain that each piece is tightened enough to ensure no "leakage" of eggs
- Takes as much time as regular hard boiled eggs - not really any faster, even though the packaging says they are "quick" to prepare
- If you like your hard boiled eggs to look like eggs, then you won't like that these have a "flat" side to them.
